Q2: Persuasion

Consider one of the most powerful community/public service ads you have seen.  Does it follow Cicero’s three goals for persuading people (Heinrichs 22)?  Explain.

  1. PUPPY ABUSE COMMERCIALS!!!!!!!!
In my opinion, these are absolutely perfect examples of using Cicero's three goals.
Stimulate audiences emotions: Sad music... Pictures of starving animals... Sad woman's voice narrating.... :,( makes an audience sad!
Change audiences opinions: Narrator of commercial: "These animals did nothing wrong, yet they were abused.. Now they are homeless and need medical attention.. Do you think that's right?" Well NO, that is NOT right!
Getting audience to act: Narrator: "Act now and contribute just twelve dollars a month... That's only 40 pennies a day! Help us save the lives of innocent animals." :(

... If you'd excuse me, I am now going to go donate....

  2. Some election ads have stood out that accuse people in public office of corruption.
Stimulate emotions: That stereotypical creepy music comes in that sometimes makes appearances in crime dramas, and the narrator has that hushed and accusatory tone to their voice.
Change opinions: They flash newspaper headlines pertaining to their point of trying to show that this person was corrupt while in office. They also throw large sums of money that might have been exchanged or alleged personal favors that they have done.
Getting audience to act: They urge you not to vote for this person so the government will not be corrupt anymore.

  3. I was suckered into this ridiculous ad for some bogus thing called a car caddy. It is completely legitimate, I kid you not. It aired very late at night when I was sleeping over at my friend's house, so I suppose its time of airing would be perfect because people are more susceptible to being persuaded at night. Stimulate emotions: Clips are shown in a traditional black and white of people dropping cell phones and french fries into that "black hole" between the drivers or passenger seat in a car and the cupholder/middle area. I thought: "wow i do that all the time!" change opinions: clips are shown in beautiful HD of a handy dandy car caddy covering up the black hole and Suzy Q. drops her phone....BUT WAIT, IT'S SAVED! all thanks to the car caddy. i thought:this thing could actually work. Getting audience to act: The commercial gave a bunch of classic buy one get 3 free deals with an instruction manual and a duffel bag to boot. I thought: wow now this is a classic infomercial. The marketing department threw in the towel somewhere around here I sense. HERE IS A LINK: https://www.catchcaddy.com/

  4. One recent ad i saw was an ad for moon sand, its just sand that is easy to clean up and doesn't go everywhere. In the ad they Stimulate Emotions: they have upbeat music playing and it shows kids having fun
Change Opinion: they show regular sand and all the messes it makes
Getting audience to act: They have 2 for 1 deals and If you buy this minute the purchase is 50% off!
